Part of or an optional part of the CMT-SE9, CMT-SE7 and CMT-SE3 systems.
The SE9 is an option kit available for some high-end Sony bookshelf systems. The particular component alone seems to be labeled the MDS-SE9, but it is an option part for the CMT-SE3 system, and looks to have been bundled with the CMTSE9. It works as a netMD device and has a long list of inputs (check the manual for more detail). It was intended to be tied into the DVD player component of the previously mentioned systems using a system control cable. When connected, it looks like it can make recordings off of the main units inputs, the CD player for sure at least.
It appears that despite the MD unit having it's own power cord it is switched on via a relay command from the CD unit. See repair section link for more info.
